This space was originally an open air breeze way between 2 wings. On the left the building was completed in 1861 and on the right, 1865. An outside staircase here provided access to the upstairs chapel in the newer wing. Around 1900, the stairs were removed and the space enclosed and the two wings were joined. The window provided natural light prior to the addition of electricity in the 1920s.
