Roofs and Towers

Construction of the 7 wing Motherhouse and Holy Family Chapel spans roughly 60 years, beginning with the 1840 wing (not seen in this view). But three wings do merge in the space pictured here: 1861 on the left, 1865 in the middle distance and 1870 on the right. In addition, the large clock tower in the foreground dates from 1890. The smaller bell tower on the roof to its left was in use for the 1865 chapel. The porches and supporting columns with decorative ironwork date from 1900. The most recent construction in this photo is the tall square-like brick closed tower which houses an elevator installed about 1980. The roof of Holy Family Chapel (1899) is visible in the distance on the left.
