St. Michael the Archangel is the patron of those working in law enforcement or serving in the military. This statue of St. Michael is found in the 1899 Chapel. Designed by Joseph Sibbel, it is made of alabaster plaster of Paris poured into a mold lined with hemp cloth. Michael is traditionally shown with a sword as he prepares to go into battle against the forces of evil. He points to the cross on his chest, reminding us to always have before us the intention of serving Jesus in this world. Wings symbolically represent the speed of the archangel’s response. Standing on the dragon indicates the victory of good over evil. When we invoke Michael’s help, we are calling on the mighty forces of heaven. References to Michael are found in the Old and New Testaments. The feast of the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael is celebrated on September 29.
